Rangoli

A few months ago, Corey and Natalie were out shopping and met a woman at a bookstore selling her activity book about Rangoli, an Indian folk art.  Natalie has both a mathematical brain and an artistic one (she'll move mountains one day, this kid) so she was into it right away. It's often done using a grid, it's typically symmetrical, and always very colorful.  She's been tackling page after page of this activity book and done some very impressive work.

Well, Santa knew we had a budding Rangoli artist in our midst and brought her a HUGE bin of sidewalk chalk so could take her work outside to the large canvas of the patio and driveway (typically, Rangoli is done outside on the street for all the world to enjoy!).  We had a long weekend last weekend and a sunny day (not incredibly common here in the winter months) so she was able to try out her new chalks on much bigger grids!  She had a blast.  She said her knees were hurting her after a while so we decided it was time to bring out the roller skating safety gear knee pads.  Worked perfectly!  We have a true installation artist in the house!
 The artist hard at work!

This is her favorite Rangoli image from her book...the butterfly!
When I asked her to pose for this picture she said,
"Wait Mom, I want to look really proud of myself!"

As she should be!
 This one is my favorite!
