Parents of the Year....

I had a not so shining moment of motherhood the other day.

Natalie and I saw Corey off in the driveway to what's become an almost nightly routine of mountain biking on a trail very close to the house we're staying in. Natalie watched him fix a flat tire, put his bike back together and then strap on his helmet before he took off. As soon as he was out of sight she asked if she could ride her tricycle. Before she boarded her bike, she pretended to fix her tire, just like she'd seen Corey do. She said, "it's all ficked" when she was finished and hopped on.

Then she said, "where's Natalie's helmet?"

(insert knife into mother's chest)

I had to hang my head in shame and tell her that she didn't have a helmet yet but that I'd get her one as soon as possible. She said, "I don't want to hurwht my head."

(twist knife in mother's chest to increase pain)

Then she PRETENDED to put on a helmet and even remembered to fasten the pretend clip under her chin.

(remove knife from mother's chest and pour salt in open wound)

Off she went down the street with her pretend helmet protecting her precious head and I just kept thinking how quickly we need to get this kid a helmet while she still thinks wearing it is the coolest thing ever. In a lame attempt at an excuse, two short weeks ago her idea of riding her bike was pulling it behind her as she walked down the driveway. Then, all of a sudden, a few short days ago she just took off riding it and goes faster than I'm almost comfortable with down the street.

What do you mean I don't have a helmet?

Apparently her pretend helmet strap was too tight.
